The following ins and outs of moving can help you write your moving checklist. Learn what to do an what to avoid for a successful move.
How to Prepare to Move
A successful move is all about preparation. Before you create your first moving to-do list, read this collection of general moving tips.
The Do Moving Checklist
1. Plan ahead. Gather moving estimates three months before your intended moving date. Hire a moving company six to eight weeks prior to the big day.
2. Get those papers in order, including address changes, information for transferring schools and medical offices, and household utility changes.
3. Pack everything you won't need until after your move first.
4. Label every box with what is inside, what room it should go to, and if this box should be unpacked first. Think about numbering boxes and keeping a master inventory list matching numbers with contents.
The Don't Moving Checklist
1. Don't wait until you unpack to donate or sell items. Put Goodwill at the top of your moving to-do list: give away everything you don't want or need before you seal those boxes. Selling your stuff takes time and energy, so do this early if you plan to sell rather than donate.
2. Don't assume your valuables are safe. Make sure your moving company is insured, use a lock box, or transfer those valuables yourself to a safe deposit box at your new bank.
3. Don't forget vital pet details. Every city has pet ordinances and rules to follow.
4. Don't forget a master moving checklist. Moving is stressful, so write down everything you need to do and every company you need to contact.
Now it's time to plan your first moving action item - don't forget to put it in list form!
